Joe Biden’s motorcade hit by car outside Wilmington headquarters
President Biden and Jill Biden were unharmed after a car crashed into a U.S. Secret Service vehicle guarding his motorcade near his campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, on Sunday night.
Wilmington police say a 46-year-old driver believed to be drunk accidentally plowed into a parked SUV that was guarding President Joe Biden’s motorcade while the president was leaving a visit to his campaign headquarters.
The president had dinner with members of his campaign staff and was discussing his poll numbers with reporters when a silver sedan with Delaware license plates slammed into the S.U.V. just after 8 p.m.
“Today, at approximately 8:09 p.m., a Secret Service vehicle securing the President’s motorcade route was struck by another vehicle in Wilmington, DE. There was no protective interest associated with this event and the President’s motorcade departed without incident,” Kopek said, directing further questions to the Wilmington Police Department.
USSS Special Agent Steve Kopek, an agency spokesperson, said in an emailed statement Sunday night there was “no protective interest associated with this event and the President’s motorcade departed without incident.”
The Bidens had been visiting the president’s 2024 campaign headquarters, greeting staffers at a holiday happy hour. It marked the first time the president has visited since staffers began working out of the Wilmington office over the summer.
