Freshman Mackenzie Mgbako arrested

IU basketball star freshman Mackenzie Mgbako arrested on criminal trespass and resisting law enforcement charges

The Bloomington Police Department arrested IU basketball freshman forward Mackenzie Mgbako around 3 a.m. Sunday morning on two Class A misdemeanor charges and released after he posted bond more than two hours later.

According to Bloomington police, officers found Mgbako about 2:15 a.m. at a Taco Bell on East Third Street after managers reported he refused to leave the property. Managers told the responding officers Mgbako was being refused service in the drive-through lane because he was “cursing at and being rude to employees.”

Officers then asked him to move his vehicle from the drive-through lane, and the 18-year-old moved into a parking space. Police said that after being ordered to leave the premises, Mgbako resisted. According to the arrest report, at one point, Mgbako began to drive out of the lot, then reversed and parked again in a space at the restaurant.

After 15 minutes, Pedigo said officers determined Mgbako would be arrested for trespassing. However, Mgbako then moved his vehicle to a nearby parking lot and parked again. When officers approached Mgbako to advise him that he was under arrest and needed to exit his vehicle, he refused to do so. Police Officers then used a baton to break the passenger side window of the vehicle and unlock the doors. They opened Mgbako’s door and gave him commands to exit the driver’s seat, which he refused to do, Pedigo said. After forcibly removing him from the car, Mgbako reportedly tensed his arms and would not allow officers to place him in handcuffs. .

Mgbako is an incoming freshman on the team and was a 5-star prospect, per 247Sports’ composite rankings. He originally committed to Duke before flipping his commitment to Indiana in May. He was one of the players expected to fill the void left by stars Trayce Jackson-Davis and Jalen Hood-Schifino after they departed to the NBA this past summer.
