Aaron Judge Hits 3 Home Runs, Becoming First Yankee to Achieve Twice in a Season

On Friday night, the New York Yankees rolled to a 7-1 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks as Aaron Judge became the first player in franchise history to have two games with three home runs.On August 23, he also blasted three home runs against the Washington Nationals.

The Diamondbacks’ advantage over the Chicago Cubs for the second of three National League Wild Card places was cut to one game when Arizona’s five-game winning streak was broken. After losing six of seven games to the Mets, Arizona’s record this season versus New York teams fell to 1-7.

Aaron Judge hit a three-run shot in the third inning and a two-run drive in the 5th off rookie starter Brandon Pfaadt (2-9). The slugger got his 3rd homer with a solo drive off Slade Cecconi in the seventh.

As Judge hit a 383-foot liner into the second deck in right field to score New York’s seventh run, the Yankees’ third home run in the seventh inning effectively sealed their victory.

It became 6-0 after his two-run drive to right-center in the fifth. After completing the bases in the seventh inning, Judge waved to the 39,143 spectators in Yankee Stadium and tipped his cap as teammate Gleyber Torres exited the batter’s box.

Estevan Florial made the final out of the eighth, leaving Judge in the on-deck circle.

Weaver, an eight-year veteran who started his career in May while playing with the Cincinnati Reds, said, “It’s nice to be on the right side of that.” He was taken off waivers by New York almost two weeks ago from Seattle.

Weaver continued, “A historical night, just to see three home runs.” “I mean, the guy hits the ball so hard, I’m surprised he doesn’t have a bazillion homers anyway.”

Judge’s season has gone ignored due to his ongoing toe injury and the Yankees’ difficulties. He is currently the reigning MVP. But Judge has hit 35 home runs in just 100 games so far this season, tying Rudy York for the most home runs ever by a player who missed at least 50 games.

Jesse Winker in 2021 was the last player to have multiple three-home run games in a season. Judge is the sixth Yankee to have multiple three-home run games in his career. Joe DiMaggio, Alex Rodriguez, Tony Lazzeri, and Bobby Murcer all had two three-home run games each, while Lou Gehrig had four such outings. Additionally, Judge has two (both this season).

Aaron Judge not only tied a single-season record for home runs hit by big leaguers who have missed 50 or more games in a season, but he also had his historic second three-homer game of the year. Rudy York, who played in just 104 games with the Detroit Tigers in 1937, scored 35 home runs, matching Judge’s total from 2023.
