Philadelphia Eagles waive veteran defensive end Derek Barnett

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Eagles are waiving defensive end Derek Barnett, who was the No. 14 overall pick by Philly in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Philadelphia Eagles first-round pick Derek Barnett has always been a good NFL player, but he’s been stuck in a very deep defensive end group with one of the league’s top teams.

Barnett, chosen as the 14th pick in the first round of the 2017 draft, was absent from the last two games due to reasons cited by the team as ‘personal.’ He was marked as inactive for the team’s matches against the Dallas Cowboys and Kansas City Chiefs.

Pro Football Focus reported that the 27-year-old pass rusher, despite playing 55 pass-rush snaps this season, didn’t register any sacks or pressures. Barnett’s contribution was minimal, evident in his mere three tackles.

Throughout the season, Barnett saw a decline in his already restricted playing time. In his final game against the Washington Commanders on Oct. 29, he was only on the field for seven snaps. Barnett remained firmly at the bottom of the depth chart, trailing behind Haason Reddick, Josh Sweat, and Brandon Graham. Similarly, rookie Nolan Smith also faced limited playing time, residing behind the team’s top three pass rushers.
